Abstract

This article characterizes the development of self-compassion and describes development on the self-compassion scale. Self-compassion involves kindness and understanding to oneself in case of pain or failure, rather than being harshly self-critical; perceive their experiences as part of a larger human experience rather than seeing them as isolating; and to keep painful thoughts and feelings in memory and consciousness rather than over-identifying with them. The results show that self-compassion is highly correlated with positive mental health outcomes, such as less depression and anxiety and greater life satisfaction.
